Interview

            "How did you start?
             - I started out dancing ballet, and my mom let me go to Italia Conti, a very famous school in
England. We really couldn't afford it, but my mom made great sacrifices so that I could stay
there. For that I will be grateful to her the rest of my life. With her as my role model I
promised myself that I some day would be famous. When I was 15 years old I was down by
Covent Garden with some friends one day, and a woman suddenly stopped me. She wanted to
know if I would like to have my pictures taken. That was the beginning and after that
everything has just kept rolling. It was like a fairy-tale.

             Your measurements?
             - 86-60-87 (cm). I'm 1,77 m tall. I'm proud of my legs.

Your secret tricks to keep your beautiful body fit?
             - I never diet. I love Italian food. My favourite Italian restaurant is actually in Paris. I smoke, I
drink now and then. I never work out.

You have published a novel, "Swan". How did you find time to write?
             - I'm very pleased with "Swan". It's a thriller, and it's about five topmodels who travel around
the world. During my many flights I've read it onto my little tape recorder. I'm already about to
             start writing my next book!

             Who is your favourite author?
             - Toni Morrison, the afro-american writer. She writes wonderful books. She's one of my great
idols, as are Joséphine Baker and Nelson Mandela.

Are there any others you especially admire?
             - Yes, the artists Basquiat and Matisse. On film: Fellini and Scorsese.

What advice would you give a girl who dreams about getting into the modelling business?
             - First of all, try to be natural. Second, believe in luck. That's what's brought me this far.

Do you make the enormous amount of money that people think?
             - I make a lot of money, but I don't want to talk about that. I work very hard and I'm worth
             every cent.

What's the first thing you look for when you meet a man?
             - Brightness and talent attract me the most. He has almost got me if he makes me laugh. The
eyes are also important. It is said that the eyes are the mirrors of the soul. But please write that
I'm not a man-eater. Falling in love just comes naturally to me.

             And in a woman?
             - The elegance, the femininity.

             Any physical or mental imperfections?
             - I have a tiny scar on my nose, but I've learned to like it. My biggest flaw? I'm always late. I
often forget time and place because I can spend hours on the phone.

Your first shock as a model?
             - In August '88 when I saw myself on the cover of Vogue, I said to myself that I'd made it! You
have reached your goal! The first black girl on Vogue's cover. France had accepted me, and I
love France. And more than anything dad Azzedine. The next year, when I saw my face on the
cover of the American Vogue, it felt like I'd won a real victory. I was the first black model
who's ever been on the cover of a major American fashion magazine. I'm not ashamed to admit
             that I cried!

You always seem to be travelling. Tell us now, where do you really live?
             - In New York. I love that city. It's always great to come back there. There's excitement in the
air. I'm happy there. I can't live anywhere else.

What acting parts have you gotten thanks to your career as a model?
             - I've had a small part in The Cosby Show. I've also played a backup singer on a single by
Vanilla Ice, and appeared in a video with Aretha Franklin. I've also played the lead in a
couple of videos produced by Michael Jackson.

What upsets you most of all?
     - Unfairness, diseases. I dream of a world liberated for all diseases. Ignorance also upsets me
a lot. How can one calmly look at the pictures fom Rwanda and not instantly want to take
action and try to ease the suffering?

     Are you religious?
     - Yes.

How would you want to die?
     - In my sleep.

You seem to be happiest when things are happening?
     - I guess I'm not made to stay in the background. I need excitement!"
